US firm Shorai Inc. have designed and developed what they say is the world's lightest and strongest power sport battery, using Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFEPO4) technology.
The company make bateries for motorbikes, but believe these are also ideal for light aircraft. The advantages, as described by the company, are many:
They can hold their charge for up to a year without maintenance, and have on average twice the service life of lead-acid batteries.
Their military-spec composite carbon cases make them tough and light, on average a fifth of the weight of lead-acid batteries.
In addition, the company say the super-fast recharge rate and no lead, acid or explosive gases mean these batteries are safer and more environmentally friendly.
Made using Japanese engineering and components, the LiFEPO4 batteries come with a two-year warranty.
Prices start at £83.95 for the 7A, £92.95 for 9A, £109.95 for 12A, £129.95 for 14A, and £156.95 for the 18A version.
