The FAI have confirmed that on 18 April 2010 Tony Gibson did indeed beat Michel Carnet's 'Speed over a closed circuit of 100 km without landing' record, with an improvement of almost 50%.
The 102 km course, flown from Mooi Plaas in South Africa at an average speed of 77 km/h, is now the standing World, Continental and South African record.
Tony flew a Nirvana Instinct with a Dudek Plasma 26.5 wing. To get speeds this high involved planning, and a lot of the flight was done at over 2,10om altitude, in order to make the most of tail winds.
